Healthy snacking is all about planning ahead. If you bake a batch of muffins or whip up some homemade granola on the weekend, you will have healthy snacks on hand all week long. Homemade snack foods not only have the benefit of being free of mystery ingredients and preservatives, they also allow you to control the amount of sodium and sugar in your food. Plus, you can always increase the nutritional content by subbing whole wheat flour or adding healthy additions, like wheat germ.

A little wheat germ goes a long way. Just two tablespoons provides about 15% of your recommended daily intake of vitamin E and 10% of your daily folate. "Vitamin E is often a little low in people's diets, so this is a good way to add in some extra—especially if you don't eat a lot of nuts or seeds, two other big sources," Giovinazzo says. It's easy to incorporate wheat germ into almost any meal, including your go-to breakfasts: Sprinkle it over cereal, stir it into yogurt, or mix it into a smoothie.

Wheat Germ….we’ve all heard of it, right? We kinda know it’s something that’s good for us – well, at least I kinda did. Then, I was sent a coupon for a container of Kretschmer Wheat Germ and found out that wheat germ is awesome and like the Original SUPERFOOD.

Even the best-dressed leaves can benefit from a sprinkling of nuts or seeds. Just add them right before serving so they stay nice and crunchy. Greens served naked or barely dressed in a splash of citrus and olive oil will gain greater appeal with a shake of dried fruit or a generous serving of fresh fruit. Meat is a great salad topper, but don't overlook beans, wheat germ, granola and canned tuna. Then there's diced or shaved cheese and green or black olives, marinated or stuffed. Dry ramen noodles sautéed in butter and sprinkled with the accompanying spice package are a nice change of pace from croutons.

You’ve been asked to bring dessert to a Memorial Day cookout this weekend. You look through your go-to recipes but you want something new, something different, and perhaps something a little lighter and healthier than what’s been in your recipe box (which, of course, is now online) for years. If you own a copy of No Whine with Dinner, consider our recipe for Nutty Apple Crisp.

I Can Cook That

When I have time on Sundays (which isn’t terribly often), I like to make a batch of muffins so I have breakfast for the week. Because I had some overripe bananas, this week I decided to make Banana Bread Muffins. I was recently sent some coupons to try Kretschmer Wheat Germ products so I thought adding some of the Honey Crunch would add some nice texture and flavor to the muffins.

I used Kretschmer brand wheat germ, which was compliments of the company. I love wheat germ, in general, and Kretschmer was as good as any other I've used. Other than free product, I was not compensated for the post. Banana crumb cake, like any coffee cake, is perfection for breakfast, a snack, or dessert. I first made it, and baked it in a loaf pan, which did not work out so great. The topping was close to burned, and the center was still mushy. I assure you that baking it in an 8x8 inch cake pan was ideal. It turned out moist, but not under baked, and the topping was beautifully golden brown.
